*On September 22, the New York Court of Appeals ruled that the appointment by Governor David Paterson (D) of Richard Ravitch for Lieutenant Governor was constitutional, overturning a previous ruling in a lower court. The Court of Appeals is the highest court in the state.
**Current Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania replaced former Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll after her passing on November 12, 2008.
