Issue Management Services
Privacy

Personal privacy is one of the most active and contentious issues being considered in state legislatures.

Given the volume and diversity of the privacy proposals, issue managers face a dual challenge. First, it is necessary to qualify the potential threats (and opportunities) posed by privacy legislation. Second, issue managers may be called upon to implement a strategy to address significant proposals.

Stateside Associates has been helping clients manage privacy issues in the states since 1990. We have seen the volume of legislation grow from a trickle of bills to restrict telemarketing to a torrent of proposals addressing every aspect of consumer information protection. Because privacy issues touch on so many substantive arenas - from health care to financial services to Internet technology - Stateside Associates established our Privacy Issues Management Team (PIMT) to ensure the highest level of client service on these issues. Members of the PIMT are all Stateside® Principals and Managers who oversee client programs affecting privacy issues. The following individuals comprise PIMT:

The following are some of the services and projects that PIMT members have managed for clients:

  • Served as program manager for a national technology association's state government relations activities, including all aspects of strategic consulting, member communication, groups liaison and issue monitoring.

  • Provided 50-state State Legislative Monitoring on the full range of privacy issues affecting Stateside clients, including Political Outlook and follow-up support by Stateside's Legislative Associates (all of whom have worked on staff in state legislatures). As part of this service, Stateside is able to provide our clients with access to this information via the easy-to-use iStateLink web portal.

  • Developed strategy and implemented "Groups" Programs, to help Stateside clients influence the debate on privacy issues within the national and regional organizations of state and local officials.

  • Prepared a 50-state compilation of statutes affecting privacy of medical information for a coalition client.

  • Identified, evaluated and managed state lobbyists representing Stateside clients on privacy issues.

  • Developed Privacy Interim Activity chart, providing a reference to key elements of interim studies and commissions in the states.

  • Facilitated client liaison with National Association of Attorneys General, Republican Attorneys General Association and state Attorneys General.

  • Prepared and delivered numerous presentations on state privacy issues and their implications for issue managers.
