*On September 22, the New York Court of Appeals ruled that the appointment by Governor David Paterson (D) of Richard Ravitch for Lieutenant Governor was constitutional, overturning a previous ruling in a lower court. The Court of Appeals is the highest court in the state.  
**Current Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania replaced former Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll after her passing on November 12, 2008.
***Greg Bell was appointed Lieutenant Governor and received Senate confirmation on September 1. He was selected by the current Governor, who replaced former Governor Jon Huntsman when he resigned to become Ambassador to China.
